A McLaughlinFilms Substack
Why not?

For over a decade, I’ve taken the time to put my thoughts on paper about film and theatre. As I type into the void on all things culturally relevant (and, let’s be honest, irrelevant), I can’t help but question what it’s all for. There was a time when film criticism and freelance writing were my career goals. For a short time, I wrote for the free Chicago-land publication Picture This Post, but I had no freedom in the subject matter. I rapidly realized that writing about films that didn’t interest me, for no pay, was not serving my passion. In fact, it made me reanalyze my future, and I stopped writing altogether for several years.
I love to write, but I’m not looking to make a living on it. In fact, I’m not looking to make any money at all. In truth, I’ll probably use this Substack to expand on ideas I write about on my Letterboxd feed, ramble about podcasts that I love, and share my Mid-west live theatre experiences.
If you like my writing, thanks! If you don’t, but you still took the time out of your busy day to engage with my nonsense, awesome! I’m happy to have you here. But, my writing is more of a living timeline of my experiences, something I’ll have for years to come.
